I guess the G Mail accounts aren't l337 anymore: I have a few invites to spare, if anybody I know is interested.
Do you think Google is storing the social network formed by the invitation history?
Posted by cradle at June 15, 2004 01:18 PMI would be interested, but yahoo just gave me 100MB of space. I was shocked. Last night I was using 69% of my mail space (I used to delete almost everything that was not incredibly witty.) But this morning I'm only using 3%. Though it's nice, I'd like to know if they, like gmail, are scanning my uber-hilarious mail.

I would love an invite. I signed up for their list, but haven't heard back.

Posted by: Ben Hill at June 15, 2004 06:38 PMOh, David, if only you could have waited about a month before offering that cruel pronouncement! Some of us still haven't got our own invites, even if we are 1337 enough to maintain our own blogs! I finally got my first chance two nights ago, but I stalled and deferred to others, while, like an earlier commenter, I dithered about whether I really needed a Gmail account when my Yahoo Extra Storage account had been upped to 2GB. I later decided that the 1337 factor was more important than such practical matters as how one manages 1Gb of email anyway, changing from the Yahoo address to the new Gmail address, etc. And all of a sudden, the invites dried up. Now you pronounce Gmail effectively open to the unwashed masses... how could I possibly want one now?
Now if Gmail addresses had numbers, like Slashdot IDs, then I suppose jumping on the bandwagon early enough to get a 4- or 5-digit ID would be worth it.
BTW, some people speculate that the Yahoo storage upgrade prompted Google to start giving invites out at a higher rate.
P.S. No joke, I decided to visit your blog today with the express purpose of seeing if you might have any Gmail account invites you were giving away.
Pardon my ignorance, but what do the numbers "1337" mean?
